The spin off of the University of Lleida, Diomedical Molecular Diagnostic, of the Biomeb trade name, has obtained a grant of 50,000 euros from the European Union, within the framework of the SME Instrument call for the Horitzo 2020 program, for the manufacture and marketing of Fibrace, a fiber that reduces cholesterol. This has been reported through the Board of Directors of the Food and Agricultural Technology Park (PCiTAL) in which the biannual relief took place in the presidency. The rector of the UdL, Roberto Fernández, leaves this position to the mayor of Lleida, Àngel Ros, and becomes vice president.

Fibrace is a new bioactive powder formulation that is obtained based on fibers derived from onion byproducts, reduces total cholesterol and increases the level of HDL cholesterol, called bad good cholesterol. It is the result of the research of the Nutren-Nutrigenomics Biomedical Research Group led by Professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the UdL José Serrano. Nutren validated the properties of this compound in models in vitro, cultures of intestinal cells and mice. Apart from its effects on cholesterol, onion fiber also reduces the weight gain in hypercalceric diets and increases the antioxidant capacity of the blood.
